VMware Unveils New Cross-Cloud Architecture™ to Give Customers Cloud Freedom and Control

At VMworld in Las Vegas, we announced the extension of the company’s hybrid cloud strategy with the new VMware Cross-Cloud Architecture™, enabling customers to run, manage, connect, and secure their applications across clouds and devices in a common operating environment.

VMware Cross-Cloud Architecture™ is delivered through VMware Cloud Foundation™, a new set of Cross-Cloud services™ VMware is developing, and the vRealize® cloud management platform.

VMware Cloud Foundation, a unified Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) platform that integrates VMware compute, storage and network virtualization for private and public clouds. You get the visibility and tools to see and manage resources, workloads and operations across all clouds. Cloud Foundation will be made available on-premises on certified hardware, or as a service from IBM today and VMware vCloud® Air™ and vCloud Air Network partners in the future, giving you unprecedented choice in your infrastructure decisions. Cross-Cloud services, previewed at VMworld, are in development to give you the ability to manage, govern and secure applications running in private and public clouds, including AWS, Azure and IBM Cloud. VMware vRealize Suite delivers a comprehensive enterprise-ready cloud management platform (CMP) that speeds up IT service delivery, improves IT operations and delivers end-user choice with control, across heterogeneous, multi-cloud environments (VMware vSphere® and non-vSphere).

A bit of an old post (2013) but apparently "Facebook doesn't virtualize its servers, because its software already consumes all the hardware resources, meaning virtualization would result in a performance penalty without a gain in efficiency."

Seems odd, but ok, and I assume their still using Spinning Rust too... (again I know the topic is almost 2 years old)

This is one of those odd situations. I had a 10K compute node (yes, 10K individual servers) cluster on Wall St. We didn't virtualize at the individual server level because the entire thing was treated as a single computer and virtualized at the cluster level.

This is what Facebook is doing. Those are not really individual computers, the virtualization is up the stack higher.

You can even do this at home with Maas and Juju 🙂

Not quite the same. That's just super efficient management of hardware. It doesn't turn the hardware itself into a cluster that acts like a single computer. It acts, more or less, like an autoprovisioning cloud, but not like virtualization.

I doubt that they will be making any "visible" Linux products for some time, at the least.

@scottalanmiller posted an almost click bait worthy title claiming that Azure was down. Azure was never down and there was no outage. He lost access to services because Microsoft closed or deleted the account improperly.

That's still Azure down. To us and our customers, Azure was completely down. All servers offline. It's an outage same as any other. It's localized in its impact to an account based "region" rather than to a datacenter-based region or whatever, but it is an outage just the same. The system was supposed to be up, and it was down and Microsoft was unable to bring it up. Even to Microsoft's own technical team it was an outage that they could not fix (for half a day.)
